Is a cruise right for you?

Some points to consider when thinking about a cruise vacation

A cruise vacation can be a very beneficial experience and there are several reasons you might want to choose a cruise for your next vacation. A cruise vacation allows you to relax in a way no other vacation can. You can travel to your destination at a leisurely pace as you sleep. When you arrive at your next port of call, you can either take part in planned group excursions or explore on your own. You can choose a variety of activities while on board, or you can relax in your stateroom. Since cruises are all-inclusive, there are no hidden surprises involved, and you are free to enjoy every amenity the cruise ship offers without incurring additional costs.

A cruise can be an excellent vacation choice for all kinds of people, including families, couples, retirees, or singles. There are specialty cruises for all kinds of people, including aspiring gourmet cooks, sports enthusiasts, golf lovers and adventure seekers. Whatever your interests, there is a cruise out there that is designed to meet your needs.

As you consider a cruise, you should also determine your budget. There are three types of cruise lines and your budget will determine which is right for you.

1. Mass Market – This category of cruise line offers amenities at an affordable price. Expect to pay $150-$300 per person per day for cruises. Although cruise ships in this category tend to be larger than some of the more expensive cruise lines, they also tend to offer more onboard activities. Food and service are similar to that of a large land-based resort. Given that there may be as many as 3000 passengers onboard, don’t expect a high degree of personal service.

2. Premium – This category of cruise line offers a high quality cruise experience at a slightly more expensive price than a Mass Market cruise. Expect to pay $250-$450 per person per day for ships in this category. There are usually a wide variety of onboard amenities and the food and service is of a higher quality in return for paying a little extra.

3. Luxury – Luxury cruises offer a high degree of personal service. Expect to pay $400-$900 per person per day for ships in this category. Cruise lengths are generally longer than seven days and include exotic ports of call. These lines offer world class service and their amenities are comparable to top luxury hotels.

You can take a short cruise to try it out if you’ve never taken a cruise before. Major cruise lines offer three or four day cruises at reasonable prices, and this will give you a chance to “sample” the amenities without risking too much money.
