The Grand Canyon lies approximately 300 miles from Las Vegas. Over millions of years, the Colorado River carved the Grand Canyon. The canyon is one mile deep and 277 miles long. You can take exhilarating helicopter tours to view the canyon from the sky.
Red Rock Canyon is 15 miles west of Las Vegas. This is a scenic area of rock formations and desert with a Bureau of Land Management visitor center and is home to feral horses, wild burros, bighorn sheep, coyotes and a variety of desert plant life.
Valley of Fire State Park is only 55 miles from Las Vegas and has beautifullandscapes, hidden canyons and unique red rock formations. You can also see petroglyphs and remains of ancient Native American civilizations.
Bryce Canyon is located 210 miles from Las Vegas in southwestern Utah. This national park has an outdoor exhibition of unique rock formations with names such as Pink Cliffs, Silent City and Cathedral.
Mojave National Preserve is only 60 miles south of Las Vegas and protects one of the most diverse environments in the world. It is full of sand dunes, volcanic cinder cones, Joshua tree forests and mile-high mountains.
Zion National Park, which is 158 miles north of Las Vegas, is a popular winter ski resort. The park features colorful sandstone canyons, rocky deserts, and forested plateaus. Zion Canyon is the largest and most visited canyon in the park. The 2,000 to 3,000-foot canyon walls are high above the river and the tree and grass-covered canyon floor.
Boulder City is just 30 miles east of the Las Vegas Strip and was built in the '30s for Hoover Dam construction workers' families. It is the site of the historic Boulder Dam Hotel, the only Nevada city that does not allow public gaming. Boulder City's historic Old Town district has many small jewelry shops offering Native American jewelry.
Rhyolite is a well-preserved ghost town 120 miles north of Las Vegas near the small community of Beatty, Nev. You can view the Potter General Store, Newton's Grille, a school, several major banks, a house made entirely out of bottles and a railroad depot.
Bonnie Springs Ranch/Old Nevada is located 20 miles west of Las Vegas near Red Rock Canyon. Built in the 1840s as a cattle ranch and watering hole, it is next to a ranch called Old Nevada where tourists can witness a re-creation of an Old West town including gunfights, horseback riding, children's petting zoo and mini-train rides. Bonnie Springs Ranch/Old Nevada is open to the public year-round.
